Name of Project: Brevort Riparian Planting

Location: Hiawatha National Forest, MI

Number of Trees Planted: 24,500

The Brevort River, located in Hiawatha National Forest in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, runs between Brevort Lake and the north shore of Lake Michigan. For this watershed restoration project American Forests will team with the U.S. Forest Service to plant 24,500 white pines and other long-lived conifer species within at least 500 feet of the stream channels that feed the Brevort River. This planting will occur along portions of 2.1 miles of the river. In past years, stream-flow regulations at the outlets of the lake have caused low flows during drought period, which has left the banks with little vegetation. The planting of these pines will shade and cool the water, as well as increase large woody debris in the river over the long-term. As a result, when low flows occur, the debris will help form pools, creating habitat for aquatic species.
