While the bayou has escaped many of the negative effects of channelization, so common to other parts of the delta, this riparian area still suffers from previous deforestation and agriculturalization. This multi-year Bayou Bartholomew Alliance project planted over 180,000 trees to reduce sediment runoff, improve aquatic and terrestrial habitat and restore the natural diversity of trees in the region. The Bayou Bartholomew also provides important habitat for many endangered, threatened and sensitive species like the American alligator, alligator snapping turtle and the bald eagle.
