AuSable State Forest- Temple Campground

Year Planted: 1996

Trees Planted: 85,000
Location: Michigan

In the AuSable State Forest 85 acres were planted with red pine, jack pine, and Norway spruce. This 85 acre tract includes the Temple Campground, which was temporarily closed to provide the trees the opportunity to be established. This area had previously suffered 100 percent oak mortality due to drought, late frost, and gypsy moths. This tree planting will reestablish the forest cover and will provide shade for the Muskegon River. Additionally, the jack pine trees will provide breeding and nesting habitat for the endangered Kirtland’s warbler. American Forests worked with the Michigan DNR to accomplish this planting.
