Name of Project: AuSable State Forest

Number of Trees Planted: 23,000

Location: Michigan

Year: 1990

American Forests partnered with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources to establish the first Global ReLeaf Heritage Forest. This project was the first of many that American Forests planted to ensure the survival of the endangered Kirtland’s Warbler.

Jack pine trees were planted in the Au Sable State Forest to provide breeding and nesting sites for these birds. Kirtland’s Warblers breed and nest specifically in young Jack pine trees. However, this specific habitat declined due to the development of farms and roads and the suppression of fire that is critical for Jack pine reproduction. Kirtland’s Warbler subsequently declined as a result of this loss of habitat, with only 500 singing males recorded in 1951.
