On the Appomattox-Buckingham State Forest near Lynchburg, Virginia, the Virginia Division of Forestry planted 159,500 shortleaf, white and loblolly pine on 329 acres. This area had been severely damaged by the southern pine bark beetle and then by two severe sleet storms. All pine stands over the age of 15 were affected and many stands were totally destroyed. The forest is used by the public for multiple uses, including hunting, fishing, hiking, soil and water conservation, timber production, applied research, education and demonstration. Additionally, the planting occurred on land that is part of the Chesapeake Bay watershed.
