The total project area encompasses 700 acres of degraded riparian habitat along the Mojave River. The area to be treated is one of only two locations found within the Mojave River system that has a perennial water flow. Being a rare water source between the coastal ranges and the Colorado River it serves as a magnet for migrating birds and local native wildlife. BLM’s Barstow Resource Area planted another 7,500 cottonwood and willow poles to continue the restoration and revegetation effort, which includes the removal of the invasive/introduced saltcedar. The bulk of the poles were planted at Afton Canyon. In addition, planting was also done following weed eradication at Salt Creek and Grimshaw Lake Areas of Critical Environmental Concern, and at Crystal and Dove Springs.
