On the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest, 71,100 Jack pine were planted to replace the white spruce forest that was lost due to insect, disease and weather-related problems. The short-needled conifer will improve the forest health and provide food and nesting cover for spruce grouse after the birds lost their white spruce forest habitat.
