Washington, DC 20460 Dear Secretary Vilsack and Administrator Perciasepe: As a supporter of American Forests, I want to take this opportunity to thank the U.S. Department of Agriculture and Environmental Protection Agency for prioritizing forest and watershed health as an integral component of protecting and sustaining sources of clean drinking water. With more than 50 percent of our freshwater coming from forests, ensuring forest health is essential to the quantity and quality of water in our country. The U.S. Forest Service’s efforts regarding the first national Watershed Condition Framework demonstrates that watershed health and forest restoration is a top priority for the agency. The framework shows an agency shift towards treating watersheds as a whole ecosystem, rather than at the forest level, to contribute to longer-lasting restoration. The EPA’s continued efforts on watershed and source water protection through the Clean Water Act and other water programs like the Watershed-Based Protection Program and the Source Water Collaborative exhibits the agency’s dedication to protecting the source of our water resources. I commend the EPA on its collaborative efforts with state, local and tribal groups to carry out source water protection programs. Thank you again for supporting our nation’s forests and watersheds.
